What you are enduring is a
roller coaster of
emotions unlike
any other.
I know, because
I am also a
survivor of suicide bereavement.
The impact of suicide bereavement

Suicide is a tragedy. Suicide is not a reason for silence or shame and being allowed to tell the story about your grief is an incredibly powerful act in itself. When my daughter took her own life in 2017 nothing could prepare me for what was coming. A life-changing event resulting in intense feelings of pain, disbelief, anger, guilt, shame and hopelessness.

I began seeking support shortly after my daughter's death and I was disheartened to discover stigma, misunderstanding and silence surrounding suicide. To help others experiencing this tragedy, I combined my professional knowledge and skills with my lived experience to help provide support for the survivors of suicide bereavement.

Following a suicide, survivors experience not only the suffering from grief but also the reaction to such a traumatic event. For the survivor, suicide is trauma. The psychological pain of the person who takes their own life becomes the survivor's emotional legacy.

Suicide bereavement survivors not only grieve the death of their loved one - they also grieve the fact of suicide and are faced with what society has conditioned us to believe what it means. It is a unique form of grief that presents a number of challenges distinct from loss from other causes of death.

HOW I CAN HELP
How I can help

Grief following a suicide can be extremely chaotic, complex, compounded and fiercely painful. It is an experience that is difficult to put into words: it robs energy and joy and coping with this unspeakable loss might be challenging, it requires time, patience, and understanding.

Trauma, shock and confusion are frequently a result of the sudden and unexpected nature of suicide - making it difficult for survivors to process their emotions. Suicide survivors often feel tainted by their traumatic experience and therefore find it challenging to be around others, which may lead to isolation and loneliness.

Counselling can offer a space where a breakdown in communication with others in the survivor's life can begin to be healed. It can also provide a space to tell your story, express your feelings and help transform the living relationship into a loving memory.

Mourning is a life's work in progress, and the grief following a suicide is incredibly lonely. Talking to someone might help you take charge of your grief. In a safe space, you might learn how to take small steps to help live through this tragedy.

It's not about getting over it. It's not about getting closure. It's about growing through our grief and choosing to survive.
